    Hydroxychloroquine immune suppressant

Had symtoms of malar rash, joint pain especially in hands, fatigue , dry eyes and dry skin . Had a biopsy of skin and confirmed cutaneous lupus. I was put on Plaquenil and for the past 8 years I have been fine with it . Now this year I have been having things pop up that are related to a low immune system.

I think you need to discuss this issue with your RD. Let him or her know you want some control, but not to make your immune system go permanently insane. I do think that Plaquenil is the mildest drug you can find. I think they all get stronger and more immune-suppressant from there, but I might be wrong! Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Doctors give trusted answers on uses, effects, side-effects, and cautions Dr. Machanic on does hydroxychloroquine suppress the immune system been shown to affect the immune system. It tends to weaken it.

Does anybody have any input concerning taking Plaquenil for long term therapy ? Some of my doctors think It is the Plaquenil causing it but then some say that Plaquenil is not an immunosuppressant drug that for some reason my immune system is out of wack . I tried to only take 100 mg to see if it would make a difference but I started with terrible joint pain and fatigue so I am back on the 200 mg a day.

  5. Howdy LadyDi, sorry you are having problems. Plaquenil is what is call an immune modifier. It is not a immune suppressant. Originally it was used to prevent Malaria. Then it was discovered to be effective for the treatment of Lupus. Plaquenil has the least amount of side affects in treating auto immune disorders.

Dosage for Plaquenil. The adult dose of Plaquenil to suppress malaria is 400 mg on the same day each week. The pediatric weekly suppressive dosage is 5 mg/kg of body weight. The adult dose of Plaquenil to treat an acute attack of malaria is an initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg in six to eight hours and 400 mg for two more days. Plaquenil works by suppressing the immune system. Unfortunately you can't tell it to attack just the germs so you suppress all of its function to spare your healthy tissue- in your husband's case, his eyes, mouth, throat. NOTE Plaquinil and hydroxychloroquine are essentially the same drug. The same effects should be expected from both drugs. The number of patients taking immunosuppressive drugs for the management of autoimmune inflammatory conditions is increasing. The general practitioner needs to be active in preventing, monitoring and managing the adverse effects of these drugs even long after the treatment has ceased.

How does Plaquenil Work ? - Road Back Foundation Mar 02, 2011 I’m currently taking plaquenil for Lyme/babesiosis. There is conflicting Lyme research on its effects on the cystic form of Lyme now. Originally, Brorson Norwegian Lyme researcher concluded plaquenil was an effective cyst-buster and now, Eva Sapi, a researcher here in CT at New Haven Uni has presented some info that conflicts with this. Go figure!
