    Alternative for plaquenil

Hydroxychloroquine is available as the brand-name drug Plaquenil. Generic drugs usually cost less than the brand-name version. Hydroxychloroquine may be used as part of a combination therapy.

Quinacrine Atabrine is another alternative, but it is prescribed less often because it can sometimes cause a yellow discoloration of the skin. It is sometimes given in addition to hydroxychloroquine if the patient does not respond to Plaquenil alone. My family doctor just suggested 3 ALEVE per day as an alternative- she HATES Plaquenil -my rheumatologist prescribes it for everyone she says right off the bat- and it is DANGEROUS PLAQUENIL tablets are white, to off-white, film coated tablets imprinted “PLAQUENIL” on one face in black ink. Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. It isn’t fully understood how this drug works to treat lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis. That means you may need to take it with other drugs. It treats malaria by killing the parasites that cause the disease.

    • Study Raises Questions about Sjogren's and Plaquenil.

Plaquenil certainly has risks, though at the dose taken for Sjogren's they are relatively low. I've been on Plaquenil several times for a multiyear period, but never felt I got any benefit from it. Others here have had good results, and a few have had bad reactions. I don't know of a natural product that is chemically similar to plaquenil. Natural" alternative to Plaquenil. I "know" I need some meds, but cannot tolerate Plaquenil. Wondering if anyone has come across something "natural" that mimics it. I originally took Plaquenil Sanofi but this brand is now discontinued. The generic form of this, on my prescription, gives me serious digestion and stomach upsets to a point I spent months trying to figure out what I thought was irritable bowel syndrome. Has anyone found a good alternative UK brand that doesn't create this side affect.
