Benefits Hydroxychloroquine is a relatively safe medicine that is used to treat mild rheumatoid arthritis. It is also used for complications of lupus. Risks Hydroxychloroquine has few side effects, but nausea and diarrhea may occur when you first start taking the drug. In very rare cases, vision loss has happened. According to the American College of Rheumatology, hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, is a “disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD,” meaning that it helps reduce the pain and swelling that come with arthritis. It can also reduce the incidence of joint damage, thus lessening the risk of developing a long-term disability from complications of RA. Drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis fall primarily into three general categories nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs, glucocorticoids, and disease-modifying antirrheumatic drugs DMARDs; DMARDs can be synthetic drugs or biologic agents targeting specific cytokines or other molecules involved in the regulation of the immune response Table.

DMARDs are a form of rheumatoid arthritis medication that slows the disease’s progression by reducing and stopping inflammation caused by autoimmune attacks. These are drugs that come in many forms and are taken as an aggressive treatment in the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis and throughout the disease’s active states.
