    Chloroquine is the drug of choice for the prophylaxis and treatment of sensitive malaria species during pregnancy. Malaria infection in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of complications for the mother and fetus, particularly in individuals not previously exposed to malaria, eg, travelers. Pregnant women are advised to avoid travel to countries where there is elevated risk of contracting malaria.

    If you're unsure, ask your GP or pharmacist how long you should take your medication for. It's very important to take the correct dose and finish the course of antimalarial treatment.

Pregnant women who take proguanil should also take 5mg of folic acid daily, for at least the first trimester 11.
