Allergy to plaquenil after being on it for years

I have been getting these horrible rashes and they are not related to sun exposure. I am starting to wonder if they are related to Plaquenil.

Normal dosage daily for plaquenil Hydroxychloroquine sulfate vs plaquenil When taking aralen should i be using an antiacid Fundus autofluorescence in hydroxychloroquine toxicity

I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Also I noticed that the Plaquenil I think was making me feel different but not in a good way. Mar 07, 2012 Hi looloo. I hope your able to respond to my question seeing that this discussion took place quit some time ago. Did you feel tingling and numbness when you stopped plaquenil? I am getting off the drug after being on it for four years and I am not experiencing nerve pain in my feet and legs. They think it seems strange to develop an allergic reaction after being fine on it for a long period. But when I describe the skin reactions or pancreatitis or extreme nausea they back off quickly! Also had faster but similar allergic reactions to Sulfasalazine anaphylaxis after 3 weeks and Amlodipine and very dramatic scurvy-like skin reaction to Nifedipine once i restarted Methotrexate injections.

I've always been one to go for the natural route and am starting to feel like I should just stop taking everything and see what happens - so frustrating. My doctor now wants me to start on Chloroquine instead of plaquenil.

You are in a tough situation. If I understand your history correctly, you started having the alopecia despite being on the plaquenil 2 years ago. Now that you're off the plaquenil, there is more fatigue and joint aches. Plaquenil is very effective for the symptoms of achiness and fatigue. However, there might be a price to pay in terms of retinal toxicity especially after taking it for as long as you have. I’ve taken Plaquenil before with no ill effects but quit taking it as I just got too lazy to remember. Well, i’m Back on it and like after a week of taking it, my anxiety has gotten so bad that my appetite has gone way down and I feel nervous all the time and have negative thoughts like my life is meaningless. For all of you out there. It is possible to develop an allergy to a drug you have been on for a long time. It is more common than you think. To have an allergy you must have been exposed to the allergen or an allergen that is chemically very close to it. For example Plaquenil Your body then makes a chemical that causes the allergic reaction.
